You might use binoculars for a lot of things, but by far one of the most pleasurable is birding. There are thousands of species of birds, and some locations in the world have more than others. If you’ve invested in a great pair of binoculars, it’s time to start enjoying this passion. It has everything you could ask for in a hobby: it’s challenging, rewarding, and it takes serious skills to be able to find and identify some of the rarer species.
In Israel, Eliat is a hot spot for migration and it’s yet to be a popular birding destination. In Southeast Poland, rich forest has been largely untouched by mankind, and nine different woodpecker species can be found here. Whether you prefer a tropical destination or something a little cooler, start discovering the beauty that can only be enjoyed with a great set of binoculars. Here are a few of the best birding destinations in the world to check off your bucket list.
Manu and Kruger National Parks
Shockingly, there are more than 1,000 species of birds in this Amazonian rainforest. Since it’s largely untouched by man, a lot of the National Park can’t be accessed, but many of the birds head to treetops and are easily spotted with quality binoculars. The good news about this destination is you’re guaranteed to see a wide variety of birds, and it’s the perfect starting place for new birders.
Kruger National Park is a completely different type of habitat, flush with grasslands that attract different types of species. There are over 500 types of birds here, and many birders come to try and spot the Martial Eagle. It’s more accessible than Manu, and an idyllic family destination. There are also many mammals to be spotted, and you can get up close and personal without risking a stampede when you pack the binoculars.
Spain and Borneo
The Cota Donana National Park in the south of Spain is a birder’s paradise. Great flamingos can be found here along with a slew of rare birds that call all corners of Europe home. The perfect weather means European birds flock to this reserve, and the migration of storks is a sight no one will forget. Being located along the coast means there are also many aquatic species to look for.
Storks and kingfishers call the island of Borneo home along with many other species. It’s very accessible, and the tropical climate attracts some of the most stunning species imaginable. It’s also a romantic getaway and a great option for honeymooners, anniversaries or couples simply looking for a less touristy escape. In Borneo, 40 unique species thrive here and don’t live anywhere else.
Bhutan
If you really want to get away from it all, head to Bhutan near the Himalayas. Small businesses flourish here, and you’ll get an authentic experience in small eateries and mom and pop-style boutiques. Primeval forests can still be found here, and it’s rich in biodiversity. No matter where your travels take you, pack the binoculars and keep an eye out for rare winged creatures to really make the most of your surroundings.
